The big, small minorities ? Cyprus

Why does Cyprus appear so high on the league table of foreign nationals studying in the UK?

In 2005-06 Cyprus (population an estimated 800,000) sends almost as many students to the UK as Pakistan (which has an estimated population of 169 million), with both countries lying just outside the top tend for sending students to the UK. So why is this?

Highly valued
Cyprus is a member of the Commonwealth, and British qualifications are very highly valued in the jobs market there. This is the main factor influencing the numbers of people coming here to study, however, the drop in fees following Cyprus joining the EU has only increased the attractiveness of the UK.

Other factors include similar legal systems, a similar driving regime and the connections provided by an established Cypriot community in the UK.
