The Guardian League-Table Row

23.09.07

The first proper meeting of the Guardian league-table review group took place in June, and it appears to have lowered the temperature of the row

The review group was formed after sustained criticism from the HE sector about the way The Guardian compiles its league tables. And, after an initial meeting earlier in the year that was described as ‘a full and frank exchange of views’, both Donald MacLeod, the paper’s on-line education-editor, and Brian Oldham, of King's College London on the critics side, say they are satisfied with the new, more constructive atmosphere.

MacLeod, while warning that no one should expect revolutionary changes, does expect there to be ‘refinements’. The questions for the HE side is whether, when these refinements are revealed at the next meeting in October or November, they feel vindicated or just well-consulted.
