Hobsons is looking for a Junior Java Developer/Programmer (Web Developer) to join its London office

This is a fantastic opportunity for a 2nd-jobber/appropriately skilled graduate to join Hobsons, a specialist in student intelligence, recruitment and enrolment management services. Hobsons PLC is a subsidiary of the Daily Mail group (DMGT), one of the largest media groups in Europe.
Reporting to the Online Development Manager, the Junior Java Developer will join the development team (within Creative Services), which has overall responsibility for maintaining and improving 9+ websites. With a short-term focus on assisting with the redevelopment of 3 core sites, responsibilities of the Junior Java Developer will include:
- Work with manager/team leader to meet deadlines on planned and ad hoc development work
- Work with Data Services and other CS team members to maintain, review and improve existing site components and functionality
- Design page structure, elements, functional interfaces (eg login, RSS)
- Perform client-side validation
- Regularly review and improve existing front-end attributes in terms of quality, accessibility, usability, speed, industry best practice
- Carry out routine development requirements from other business units
- Create and maintain in-house tools
- Contribute to server & database maintenance
- Liaise with 3rd party suppliers – hosting, server support, designers, contract developers
- Apply HBX/Google Analytics/other traffic monitoring code, and run relevant reports
- Work with the Web Content Editor to create, develop and implement SEO best practice guidelines, and other requirements
- Research new/required technologies and their application
- Improve back-end integration understanding, and apply as required
- Liaise with internal customers to define product requirements
- Assist in writing of technical specifications
- Work with team leader to maintain documentation of all web development activity
Essential skills
- HTML (XHTML) 1-2 years commercial experience
- CSS 1-2 years commercial experience
- Jsp at least 1 year commercial experience
- Photoshop
- Computer science 2.1 (minimum)
- O-O design
