The Global Management Challenge (GMC), the world’s largest strategic business competition, kicked off in style today
Hobsons has brought the GMC to the UK to give graduate recruiters a new way of interacting with penultimate- and final-year undergraduates from the country’s leading universities. Teams comprising three to five students are required to make key decisions across every functional area of their virtual business.
Sophisticated business simulation software is used to analyse these decisions and generate in-depth reports, and the aim of the game is to finish with the highest price on the virtual stock exchange. Teams progress through a first round and a semi-final to reach the GMC UK national final, to be held in London in March 2007. The winning team will then compete at the international finals in Macau, China, in April 2007.
Get involved
Hobsons is offering UK graduate recruiters the chance to support a team and possibly mentor them as they decide on their business strategy and game tactics. And don’t worry if your company is still to get involved – there’s still time to be matched with a student team.
The GMC National Launch event, which was hosted by the University of Warwick, brought together many of the 1,000 talented students, top UK universities and supporting companies and partners taking part in the competition. The event gave representatives from the leading graduate recruiters taking part in the event, which includes Watson Wyatt, BAE Systems, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and PwC, a chance to spend time with their student teams and network with each other.
Soft skills
The players and mentors were treated to pearls of wisdom about how to succeed in the virtual business world from Frederico Agrò, previous Italian National Champion and a GMC supremo. Jon Baldwin, President of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), and Registrar of the University of Warwick, also spoke at the event. ‘It’s great to see a virtual game that focuses on the soft skills agenda,’ he enthused. ‘The GMC provides a platform for students to explore their entrepreneurial spirit and experience leadership and risk-taking without the consequences of doing so in the real world.’
